One-Day Diversity Workshop for Managers

Seminar # 67710

Overview

Major race- and gender-discrimination lawsuits over the past 10 years cost U.S. businesses $974 million in settlements alone—not counting attorney fees, other additional costs and decreased market capitalization due to negative public relations. Most of these lawsuits could have been avoided through strategic diversity management, and that starts with diversity training. Diversity is not limited to compliance alone—almost all of the companies that have been the subjects of high-profile discrimination litigation in recent years were in compliance with EEOC. Their predicaments occurred because they failed to recognize and eliminate bias within their corporate cultures. AMA’s one-day workshop for managers is an important first step in sensitizing managers to diversity issues and in managing diversity to create competitive advantage.

Product Description

This one-day workshop introduces managers to the concept of diversity and inclusion. To build their knowledge and awareness of difference, participants will take the Discovering Diversity Profile ® (Inscape Publishing), learn to interpret it, discuss results and complete an individual action plan. Managers will have an additional opportunity to view the results of the data from a group perspective and discuss the implications for the organization. They will have an option to complete an organizational action plan. The workshop will also address creating a multicultural workplace and includes a small group activity to aid the discussion.

Who Should Attend

All managers are appropriate for the full day workshop. Since this is an on-site program, limiting the level of managers attending any one session may lead to greater openness in discussions. However, this depends on the culture and goals of the organization. Vertical representation in the workshop can be very productive for driving understanding and change.

Benefits

By the end of the workshop, participants will gain the tools to:

  • Understand the relationship between inclusion of all employees and organizational competitiveness
  • See how reactions to perceived differences can impact team performance in crucial business activities
  • Assess their own attitudes and behaviors regarding diversity
  • Plan immediate and long-term actions to change the inclusion atmosphere in their own groups
  • Examine how their effectiveness as a manager can create a culture of inclusion
  • Determine short- and long-term implications and goals for their behavior
  • Pinpoint the individual or group changes that need to occur to reflect new learning

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify their strengths and potential areas for development in how they perceive and work with people different from themselves
  • Learn to apply the principles of diversity to improve innovation, creativity and teamwork in your organization
  • Plan immediate and long-term actions, based on what they have learned, to make a real difference in achieving your organization’s business goals

Instructional Methods

During the one-day workshop, participants will hear a brief introductory lecture on the business reason for the workshop, define diversity in a group activity with flip charts, undergo a self-assessment profile and learn to interpret it, discuss the results, and create an individual action plan. Managers will have the opportunity to discuss the impact of managerial behavior and what they can do to increase effectiveness. They will view the Wealth, Innovation and Diversity video and discuss implications for work. In several small group activities, participants will investigate the impact of perception on behavior and create a vision of an inclusive workplace. Finally, during a group activity, managers will look at the systems and processes in the organization to determine where change needs to occur.
